Typo with Ruby Rails 1.1

Posted by Vince Wadhwani on Apr 18, 2006 in | gnu/linux

If you happen to have a blog based on typo ,like yours truly, and have recently upgraded to version 1.1 of Ruby on Rails then you might have noticed that you can no longer post articles.

Fortunately, the fix is very easy if you have your own server.

  • Step 1: type this command: svn export http://dev.rubyonrails.org/svn/rails/tags/rel_1-0-0 vendor/rails
  • Step 2: Reboot
  • Step 3: There's no Step 3..

  • Enjoy and happy blogging!

    DC Rails Workshop

As far as Rails Workshops go, this one is a bargain. $400 gets you *two* solid days of Rails Instruction right in Washington, DC.

America in 6 Panels: Part 1

Posted by Vince Wadhwani on Apr 14, 2006 in | environment | urban

It's not often that a cartoon comes up that pretty much sums up how I feel so succintly. Yet today Tom Toles published this beauty. It is pure genius and over the next few days I would like to address each panel one by one. They are all extremely important and worthy of your attention. So let's get started!

    A small pedestrian victory.

Posted by Vince Wadhwani on Apr 10, 2006 in | urban

In November there were two problems that were really bothering me. In the suburbs there was a stretch of sidewalk near the metro that the city kept plowing snow onto. And in the city there was a pedestrian walk signal that was not working correctly. I set out to tackle both problems. One with a small time municipal government and the other with beaurocracy of the nations capital. My success was mixed but not in the way you might expect.

    Kozmo.com reborn in DC

Posted by Vince Wadhwani on Apr 05, 2006 in | urban

Once upon a time, during a dot com boom, in a land far far away, there was a service called Kozmo.com. Unlike many software driven or web-driven companies, kozmo had a different vision for the Internet -- use it to gain access to a bevy of products within the hour. For the first time, one could log into a website, place an order, and witness the fruits of your efforts in the form of a courteous delivery person at your front door. All in the time it takes to watch a couple of episodes of Simpsons back to back.

    iFM for PSP: A mini-review

Posted by Vince Wadhwani on Apr 02, 2006 in | general

I bought a PSP the day it came out. It was my first media device purchase since a first generation iPod back in 2001. The PSP had room for a few MP3s with the Memory stick duo and so I thought it would serve me well during my daily 45 minute train commute to the burbs. And for a while it did.

Suspend to RAM on THinkpad X41

Posted by Vince Wadhwani on Mar 27, 2006 in | gnu/linux

I have been using Archlinux for quite a while now. The only lasting complaint I have had against it is the lack of working suspend/resume for my thinkpad X41. Recently, with the new 2.6.16 kernel that changed.

There are lots of great howto's for the thinkpad with linux so I will not rehash what's there. One thing that *is* missing, is how to get suspend/resume working on an Archlinux system.

    So briefly, here it goes:

Setting up a mixed PHP/Ruby on Rails Dev Environment

Posted by Vince Wadhwani on Mar 17, 2006 in | gnu/linux

I've been doing some work with Ruby on Rails on my Archlinux system. Recently, I accidentally messed up that system and had to reinstall my tools all over again. I took the time to write some of that process down in hopes that it may help others who want to develop and deploy both Ruby on Rails (RoR) and PHP on the same machine.

    Some trouble with Archlinux

Posted by Vince Wadhwani on Mar 16, 2006 in | gnu/linux

I accidentally screwed up my Arch System last week. I was installing a rather big package (kde) and ran out of room on my root partition. I made the mistake of manually erasing some files which resulted in some wonky errors. Eventually my bash shell died and rebooting gave me a kernel panic. I'm unsure as to what led to this downward spiral, and frankly I'm not interested in repeating the experience to figure it out. However, I am infinitely glad that I keep my /home folders on a completely different partition. Chalk one up for foresight!
