10 Steps I Took to Learn Ruby on Rails
Posted by Vince Wadhwani on Sep 06, 2006 in | general | gnu/linux | html/css | ruby
A few of my friends asked me how I picked up Ruby on Rails. I basically went from knowing next to nothing about programming to being able to put together web sites like this one in a matter of just a few months. Here are the steps I took:
Free Music Download: West Exit

Buyindie was linked by an article on OS News the other day, which in turn was Dugg. The result was a whole lot of hits and some interesting music recommendations. One of those is this band called West Exit. This song, titled Where Ever You Are, is an electro pop number that brings me back to the 80's for some reason only my subliminal mind could answer.
Anyone interested in buying their music should head over to Magnatune and pick it up (for whatever you want to pay for it)!
Free Music Download: Cut Chemist

Starting off like an instrumental techno number, The Garden by Cut Chemist morphs into a heavily layered number complete with sampled lyrics in Brazilian Portuguese. Reminds me a little of Thievery Corporation's Bossa Nova.
Naturally, you can buy the Album on iTunes by clicking the button below.
Free Music Download: Fourstones

It's Labor Day weekend and lots of people have time off to sit around and surf the web. Well, guess what? A lot of bloggers have taken the weekend off too which means you're stuck refreshing Slashdot all day hoping for an interesting story.
Never fear, b/c here is a free music download to the rescue. This is a slowish, 91BPM track by fourstones called Deep Down In My Heart. Unlike the song I pulled yesterday, this one *really is* licensed under Creative Commons. So remix away and then go post the results on ccMixter.
Free Music Download: Scott Andrew

This is a nice acoustic pop song from Scott Andrew. As advertised on his site, this is a lo-fi, acoustical number that really is charming in its simplicity. It's the type of song that you stay for one more drink in the bar to listen to, no matter how late it is and how badly you want to go home. Close your eyes, picture yourself in that bar, and take a listen.
Free Music Download: William Berry & Brad Sucks

Time to Take Out the Trash is a remix of a Brad Sucks song of the same name. William Berry has remixed it to add some "James Bond" type elements. This is released under the Creative Commons license, so feel free to remix it again!
Review: Nokia N73 w/ OS X

Dec 04 update Also check here for instructions on connecting to the Internet using your N73's data package with Mac OS 10.4 and Bluetooth.
Nov 15 update: Be sure to read my experiences with the November firmware update too.
After spending a few months with T-mobile's crippled Samsung T-809, I went out and bought a Nokia N73 from Hi-mobile. I scoured the net and took counsel from wise friends before plunking down close to 5 franklins for this particular model.
The Race for DC Mayor
Posted by Vince Wadhwani on Aug 30, 2006 in | politics | urban
September 12 is only the primary, but DC is so heavily Democratic that for all intents and purposes it may as well be the election itself. I had a chance to hear one candidate, Marie Johns, speak and answer a number of questions in a small private forum consisting of about 40 Georgetown residents.
Free Music Download: The Clientele
Posted by Vince Wadhwani on Aug 30, 2006 in | music
Compared to the other bands featured on this site, The Clientele are old hat. With 22 albums under their belt it's no wonder that this song, E.M.P.T.Y. sounds so well put together. Smooth UK rhythm reminiscent of some very early 60's music but clearly modern at the same time.
Free Music Download: The Pipettes

A pop candy band from the UK, The Pipettes are a seven piece band. Their most recent album was recently reviewed by Pitchfork Media This song is called Dirty Mind and it's a little catchy. I don't think I could listen to it more than a couple of times, but it sure makes for a nice change of pace from the usual.
