New Nokia N73 Firmware
Posted by Vince Wadhwani on Nov 14, 2006
Update: Feb 03/2007: See Part 2 here.
Update: Dec 04/2006: Also check here for instructions on connecting to the Internet using your N73's data package with Mac OS 10.4 and Bluetooth.
Nokia just released a new version of their firmware for the great N73. You can get it over here. But before you go about downloading and updating, be sure to read further for my experiences:
First of all, before you do anything, make sure you have Windows 2000 or XP. I use Mac OS X and had to use boot camp and a full copy of Windows XP in order to update. (On a related note, if you use Boot Camp with a MacBook Pro be sure to grab the latest EFI update from Apple (use Software Update).
Next, I highly recommend you back up your data on your N73 before starting. Usually I ignore these warnings but trust me, the firmware update erases ALL your data and settings that includes contacts, calendars, settings, *everything*. In essence it is like a factory restore with newer firmware. It's no wonder an over the air update was not available this time.
Go ahead and follow the Nokia instructions and update once you've got the above done. After the initial download you'll plug in the N73 and then endure another 66.1 MB download so be sure you're doing this with broadband or you'll be very sorry. You can find a thread on the update over here if you prefer a bbs instead of commenting below.
I may be imagining it, but here are things I noticed:
- Faster app switching
- Better rendering with the web browser
- Fewer Sim Card Registration Failed errors
- Error when disconnecting USB cable from the Mac fixed
- Sudoku is gone..
Jan 05 Update: Get back your Sudoku by following these instructions!

Very nice writeup on how to do the upgrade, and things to be aware of.
I also did the firmware update and agree with your assessment – the OS is definitely faster. I set the log application to 1 day, and app switching is quite speedy. I also noticed that low light photos no longer have that bluish cast.
All in all, the firmware update was an improvement on an already wonderful phone!

Thanx Vince W. great advise, and great firmware upgrade available thro’ Nokia.
Agree with Karen, and luckily i backed up the phone as infomration and settings were lost after the upgrade.
Nokia has fixed some of the issues, shows that they are listening. Hopefully the next upgrade improves the speed and stability of the phone. Memory low remarks often when trying to zoom in the photo

I have an O2 UK branded N73 model and the online update didn’t work - saying no update was available for my phone. However, I changed the phone product code with Nemesis Service Suite (NSS) to a unbranded N73 code. This allowed the update to go ahead fine and now I have the latest unbranded firmware on it. Just a quick visit to O2’s site to resend the O2 Active settings and it’s all good.
A few things I have noticed are better so far - speed and bluetooth stability being the main two. I was getting ‘Sim Registration Failed’ errors followed by a restart quite a lot but now they have gone.
A superb phone just got better. Looking forward to the next update.
